Hey family!
Lots of stuff happening on your side of the world this week... ha ha ha. On the topic of the phone call, I will be able to do Skype since my companion wants to and I thought, "Hey, why not, right?" I don't know where we will do that though. It's kinda crazy, but I am excited for that. This week has been awesome! I could not have asked for a better companion on the mission. His name is Elder Oyarzun. You will have to ask Alex how to say it. I am still trying to get used to saying it, but he is a companion I really get along with. He is from Chile. I think around the same part that Houston is at. Anyway, he speaks perfect English which is super cool and interesting, for two reasons. One is the fact that he speaks three languages and he's really good at all three. The next part is that he has a knack for helping me correct my Portuguese in a way that I understand and it makes more sense. He speaks extremely good Portuguese and the only reason why people know he's not from Mozambique is the fact that he is not black. Other than that, they want to say he's from Portugal or Brazil. We get along pretty well and I feel like this transfer is going to fly and it will be really good. We have three baptisms set up for the 22nd of this month and I am ready to get into the water (it's hot out here). The only bad thing this week was that towards the end of my transfer with Elder Philips it's like we did less and less effective work. Nothing that was really his fault, but I felt like we were doing a lot of the same things (maybe because he was going home?) I am pretty sure that's all about to change based on what I am learning form ElderOyarzun and how he teaches.
Last night we made chocolate chip cookies and we had to smash up a bar of Cadburry chocolate which is like really good chocolate. The cookies were really good and we had fun making them. As a district I think we are planing to do a little Christmas party like we did for Thanksgiving and I know that Pres. Kretly is planning something for all the missionaries in Maputo. That should be fun (just partying it up over here! ha ha ha). Oh, and thanks for the pictures of Anthony! That is so cool that he got his braces off. I bet he is happy about that. I can't wait to hear where he is going on his mission. That will be super cool.
Oh ya, so funny experience this week.... ha ha ha OK, so we were teaching this new couple in this really nice house and these guys seems pretty wealthy (he has tile floor, a flat screen TV, you know the works). So we start teaching him and his wife brings out this drink which is called morrehou (moehayoo) and this stuff is made out of flower and is the national drink of Mozambique. I think I have told you about it before. Anyway, it's about the consistency of slime, I wanna say, but it's white and it has little chunks of flower in it. Super weird. They handed some to me and my companion and you usually mix some brown sugar in with it to make it a little sweeter. So we start drinking this stuff and we are talking with this family and I notice my companion isn't drinking as much and I thought it was because hedidn't like the texture of the drink so I finish my glass and I don't wanna be rude, so I ask for more. It's not bad, it's just a little strange the first time you try it. They call it a refresco or like a soft drink. I finish my second glass and my companion is still kinda on his first and this little girl there is also drinking some. After we talk a little, we get into the restoration and the lesson goes pretty good. We will have to see if they act at all and if we can come back to talk more about our church. After the lesson my companion says to me, "Did you know that had alcohol in it?" I said, "Had alcohol in what?" He said, "In the morrehou." I said, "No, are you serious?" He said, "Ya, they have to ferment that stuff." Of course, I don't know the word for ferment in Portuguese ,so I totally missed that part of the conversation. He said itdidn't have much in it, but enough that he could tell. So I am sitting here feeling super guilty because I drank two glasses. The funny thing is I have had it before and I didn't feel any different. Now I just feel kinda dirty inside just because I couldn't get it out. I don't think I will willingly try or have that stuff ever again now that I know what's in it. So that was my experience this week. It's funny because I tell people all the time here that drinking is bad, but here I am drinking without even knowing it. Needless to say, I will be steering clear of that stuff.
So that was my experience this week, that and every other chappa ride we get down here is an adventure. Last week I almost got ran over after I got off a chappa by a nun riding a bike. She started yelling at me in Portuguese, even though I am pretty sure it was her fault since I couldn't see out of the chappa and she was riding right next to the door while people were getting out... but hey, that's OK. Maybe God just wants her to get closer to Jesus Christ and what better way to do that than to run into a missionary of the Lord. ha ha ha! You gotta be careful what you ask for when you want an answer from God. ha ha ha. I think I am ready to start another week and make it better than this last one. Just ready to get to work.
We should be Skyping around 24 or 25 so I will get more info on that as we get closer. It's good to hear that Dad is getting some time to relax. Are you guys going to go anywhere or just are you just gonna stay in Vegas? Don't forget to get Mom to relax. I know howChristmas is at the house. You guys always say you will slow down a little bit, but you don't, so don't forget to enjoy a Christmas without the photo bomber...aka me! (you guys might actually get some decent photos this year ha ha ha).
Hope everything's good at home. Everything is going great here (I think I will be transferred out of this area next transfer, maybe, but I am excited to maybe see more of Mozambique).
Anyway, thank you for all your love and support
Love Elder PROKSCH
